How to Get Onix in Pokémon Pokopia
Step-by-step guide to finding, freeing, and befriending Onix in Pokémon Pokopia. Complete the Yawn Up A Storm quest, raise humidity, and build Onix's habitat.
Author: Pokopia Guide Team
Onix is one of the most important Pokémon in Pokopia — its
Bulldoze specialty is essential for rebuilding the Pokémon Center and relocating buildings. You'll unlock Onix by completing the "Yawn Up A Storm" main story quest in the Withered Wastelands.
Where to Find Onix
Onix is trapped in a cave northwest of the Withered Wastelands Pokémon Center, near the gate. You can reach the cave two ways:
- Use Rock Smash on the ground diagonally from Scyther's tree to reveal a cave gap
- Destroy blocks on the nearby road to reach the beach, which has another cave entrance
Follow the speech bubbles inside until you hear someone calling for help. You'll find Onix pinned behind unbreakable rocks.
Don't try to smash the rocks yet — they cannot be broken until rain softens them. This is the most common mistake players make.
Step-by-Step: Freeing Onix
Step 1: Talk to Professor Tangrowth
After discovering Onix, return to Professor Tangrowth. Escort them to the beach ruins for a group meeting with your Pokémon. The conclusion: you need Slowpoke to make it rain.
Step 2: Find and Attract Slowpoke
Build a Seaside Tall Grass habitat to attract Slowpoke:
- Place at least 4 Tall Grass blocks adjacent to the ocean
- Wait for Slowpoke to appear
Step 3: Guide Slowpoke to the Pokémon Center
Slowpoke moves slowly and cannot jump. You need to:
- Build stairs with varying heights for Slowpoke to navigate terrain
- Soak any cracked dry ground with Water Gun before Slowpoke crosses it
- Talk to Slowpoke if it stops moving — it will tell you what's blocking its path
Step 4: Raise Humidity
Slowpoke won't yawn unless the environment is humid enough. You'll see the message: *"Slowpoke tells you that it's too dry, so they're feeling very awake."*
Methods to raise humidity:
- Water dry ground with Water specialty Pokémon
- Plant seeds and flowers (Bulbasaur can help with
Grow) - Break brown blocks plugging old water sources with Rock Smash
- Place a
Horsea Fountain (50 Coins from the PC Shop) - Add decorative fountains and sprinklers
For a detailed guide, see How to Raise Humidity in Pokémon Pokopia.
Step 5: Set Up a Rain Dance Site
Follow Squirtle's guidance to set up a Rain Dance Site:
| Item | How to Get |
|---|---|
2 Castform Weather Charms (Rain Form) | 1 from the shop, others in the cave |
| 1 Plate of Food | Available at the shop |
| Leppa Berries | Found in trees throughout the area |
Assign a Water specialty Pokémon to perform the Rain Dance.
Step 6: Trigger Rain and Free Onix
Once humidity is high enough:
- Interact with Slowpoke to trigger its Yawn — rain begins
- If rain stops, talk to Kyogre at the ocean to start a second round
- Return to Onix's cave — the ground has softened
- Use Rock Smash to break the clay bricks blocking Onix
- You only need to break enough blocks — Onix handles the rest
Building Onix's Habitat
After the rescue, build a Smooth Tall Grass habitat for Onix:
- Find the Smooth Rock — it's in the same cave where you freed Onix, on a grey block on the left wall before the path branches
- Create Dry Tall Grass — use Leafage on unwatered dirt (this is the only way; it cannot be bought)
- Arrange a 2×2 square of Dry Tall Grass and place the Smooth Rock next to it
- The game confirms: *"Restored a Smooth Tall Grass habitat"*
- Press the up directional button near Onix to guide it to its new home
Don't miss the Smooth Rock before leaving the cave — go back for it if you forgot.
Why Onix Is Essential
Onix's specialties make it one of the most valuable Pokémon in the Withered Wastelands:
| Specialty | What It Does |
|---|---|
Bulldoze | Required for rebuilding the Pokémon Center, operating Relocation Kits, and demolition tasks |
Crush | Crushes fruits into paint for customization |
Rebuilding the Pokémon Center
Onix is mandatory for the Pokémon Center rebuild. You need:
- Rebuilding Kit — 1,000 Life Coins from the PC Shop
- 8 Pokémon assistants with specific specialties (Onix must be one of them)
- Materials:
Lumber ×20,
Stone ×20,
Leaf ×10, Vine Rope ×10
Quick Tips
- Don't rush to the cave — Focus on raising humidity first; you can't free Onix without rain
- Clear Slowpoke's entire path in advance — Water Gun every dry patch before escorting it
- Grab the Smooth Rock from the cave — Don't leave without it or you'll have to go back
- Dry Tall Grass needs Leafage on dry dirt — Don't waste time looking for it in shops
- Leave space around the habitat — Onix is large and needs room to navigate to its home
